Tips to sanitize your Yoga Mat

How have you been sanitizing and keeping your Yoga Mat?

Having a cleaning and care routine of your Yoga matt is important. It is not only for hygiene reasons, but also for maintenance. You will be, as well as, working on one of the Yoga behaviors (yamas) called Saucha - which means cleaning the body, mind, spirit, and environment.

Yoga mats absorb all the perspiration and impurities they are exposed to, which means they can quickly become filthy or even contaminated with bacteria. To keep your mat clean, it is crucial to establish a consistent cleaning routine.

It is critical to remember to disinfect your Yoga Mat immediately after use.

Quick cleaning: prepare your own sustainable solution

  • White vinegar (apple).
  • Lukewarm water (if possible).
  • Tea tree oil (antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, hypoallergenic and non-toxic).
  • Lavender (soothing).
  • Mix in a spray bottle 3/4 water,1/4 vinegar, 2 drops of essential oil and 1 drop of lavender.
  • Spray it evenly on the carpet.
  • Wipe the surface dry with a clean cloth

In addition to disinfecting your Yoga Mat after each class, you should wash it once a month, but avoid using chemicals because skin contact during exercise can be harmful and cause allergic reactions.

Deep cleaning: wash the Yoga Mat with soap and water

  • Natural liquid soap.
  • Lukewarm water.
  • Combine natural soap with water.
  • Handwash your matt.
  • Rinse it by water.
  • Let it to dry in a shaded area away from direct sunlight.
