Yoga as an Ally in Cancer Treatment
Yoga as an Ally in Cancer Treatment

We hear more and more about cancer, being the most mentioned disease in recent times. Those who go through this disease know how much it can weaken the body, leading to a loss of appetite, feeling of weakness, lack of motivation, and the negative thoughts that may arise. That is why having a practice like Yoga in daily life can make all the difference in the process.

In the context of Yoga, breathing techniques, physical exercises, and meditation provide numerous benefits for the cancer patient, aiming at physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, which positively impacts daily life. Below, I present just four benefits:

Reduction of stress and anxiety: Regular practice of Yoga helps to decrease cortisol levels, making the patient feel more relaxed after the practice.

Improvement of self-esteem: It is common for low self-esteem to be one of the side effects of the disease. Practicing Yoga, over time, helps to see things in a more positive way, accepting this phase of life.

Relief of depression symptoms: The combination of breathing, meditation, and respiratory exercises acts as a natural antidepressant for the body, preventing depression symptoms.

Increase in sleep quality: Relaxation, specifically, helps to reduce insomnia, thus improving the quality of life.

Although there is evidence to suggest that Yoga can contribute to cancer prevention and overall well-being, it is recommended to practice it under the guidance of a professional in the field. In addition, it is essential to adopt a holistic approach that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption.
